Why we've invested in Spoor
Trend
The expansion of renewable energies is essential for the sustainable energy transition, but at the same time, it interferes with existing ecosystems and places new demands on the security of critical infrastructure. Operators and developers, therefore, have a responsibility to consider climate targets, biodiversity, and infrastructure protection together.
Problem
Bird migration monitoring is a pain point for wind farm developers and operators and is required by regulations in many geographic markets, from building permits to operation. In offshore tenders, a bird migration monitoring concept is almost always requested and helps wind farm developers position themselves more successfully in tender processes.
Solution
Spoor leverages AI and augmented computer-vision technology with off-the-shelf cameras to deliver the world’s lowest cost, highest accuracy solution for bird and bat monitoring, unlocking faster permitting, lower curtailment, and regulatory-grade biodiversity compliance.
That means
• AI-based data analysis that differentiates Spoor’s solution from competitors
• Model training using an extensive database of over 100,000 hours of video material
• Operates with standard cameras (no specialized hardware required)
• Object recognition at distances of up to 2 km
• More accurate classification of individual bird species
• Establishes a technological market standard likely to be required by future regulators
About Spoor
Spoor is a Norwegian technology company using artificial intelligence and computer vision to help wind developers and operators monitor and protect biodiversity. Its software integrates directly into wind farm control systems to provide continuous, high-resolution insights on bird and bat activity, supporting smarter mitigation, faster permitting, and more sustainable energy generation.
Founded in 2020 and based in Oslo, Spoor partners with leading developers and turbine OEMs globally to deliver data-driven, science-backed biodiversity risk management.
Our technology has reached a point where it can deliver the accuracy and reliability that wind developers have been waiting for.
About Ask Helseth
Ask is an entrepreneur, Co‑Founder and CEO of Spoor. Before founding Spoor, he worked as a Service Designer at Scandinavian Design Group and Knowit, and later joined the venture-building program Antler as an entrepreneur. Together with Helge Reikerås, Ask founded Spoor in 2020 to bring AI‑driven biodiversity monitoring to the renewable energy sector. Today, Ask focuses on advancing technology that enables wind developers to better understand and protect wildlife as they scale clean energy infrastructure.
